Europe and its People
A Geographic Reader for the Fifth School Year

by Will S. Monroe
& Anna Buckbee

Front Cover:

This is a very nice copy of an old geography text book. This book was published in 1912 by Harper & Brothers Publishers, New York & London. The book measures 5 inches by 7 5/8 inches and contains 120 pages. The tan cloth pictorial cover is lightly soiled. A previous owner has signed his name on the front (twice) as you can see in the above scanned image. The back cover has some spotting (ink?) which is purely cosmetic. The cover shows minor signs of wear to the edges, corners and to the top and bottom of the spine, hardly worth mentioning. The spine is tight and the hinges are strong. There are lovely pictorial end pages. The pages are printed on good quality paper and show no signs of foxing. One of the pages is torn, however it is intact and the text is readable as it is mainly limited to the bottom margin. There is a personal book plate on the front free end page. Exceptions noted, the overall condition of this old book is good.

Excerpt - The British Isles:
… Since people everywhere need food, when we study any country, whether from books or from travel, we always look to see where the food supply comes from. And while we shall find that a great deal of food is raised in the United Kingdom, still it is not nearly enough for the people. As a matter of fact, less than a third of the land of England, one-fourth of Ireland, and one-sixth of Scotland is used for crops. Wheat and barley are grown in the southeastern part of England and oats in the northern part.

The farmers make the most of the land. The fields are very carefully cultivated; and the yield to the acre is much larger than in the United States. Since labor is cheaper in England than with us, more hand work is done; and one does one see the enormous machines which are used for planting and harvesting in the great grain belt of our own country.

There are fine pastures on the uplands; and even the very hilly regions will support sheep. Also great number of cattle and hogs are raised. All the stock receives the best of care. You may have heard of the excellent English roast beef and mutton…
End excerpt - obviously written before “Mad Cow Disease” became rampant!
