Wolfgang Lotz

The Champagne Spy
Israel’s Master Spy Tells His Story

Dust Jacket - front:

This is a very interesting old book about a master spy. This is a copy of the first American edition which was published in 1972 by St. Martin’s Press, New York. The book measures 5 5/8 inches by 8 ¾ inches and contains 240 pages. The dust jacket shows minor signs of wear to the edges. The orange cloth cover has gilt title on the spine. The actual cover of the book itself shows minor signs of wear, hardly worth mentioning. The spine is tight and the hinges are strong The pages show no signs of rips. Exceptions noted, the overall condition of this book is very good.

Excerpt – Dust Jacket:
As a top Israeli agent operating in Egypt, Wolfgang Lotz lived the charmed and extravagant life of a James Bond. Adopting the cover of a wealthy German horse-breeder he mixed in the highest and most glittering circles of Egyptian society, the valued friend and confidant of generals, cabinet ministers and senior intelligence officers. Convinced he as an ex-SS Officer hiding from his war crimes, Cairo’s German colony in particular welcomed the handsome Lotz and his wife Waltraud to their midst, and it was from the German military experts then advising the Egyptians that Lots discovered vital political and military secrets (including details of rocket installations) which he broadcast regularly to Israel for nearly five years.

Arrested suddenly in 1965, Lotz and his wife became the center of a sensational public show trial which involved many leading personalities. They were saved by the Six Day War of 1967, when the Israelis made the repatriation of prisoners (some 5,000 Egyptians, including nine generals) conditional upon their release.

Here, in Lotz’s own words, is the inside story of those dramatic years – an unbelievable spy story that happens to be true.
