This is a copy of the January, 1896 edition of this magazine. In addition to the main article, the book contains some news, notes and advertisements. The magazine measure 6 ½ inches by 9 ½ inches and contains a total of 36 pages (including covers). The inside front cover and back covers are printed as well. Note: the pages are numbered from the start of the year. The soft cover is securely attached. The cover shows minor signs of wear. The cover has a tear at the bottom of the spine approximately 1 inch long. The pages show no signs of rips or foxing. The magazine has a slight “crease” from top to bottom near the center of the magazine. The right hand corner of the magazine is also lightly creased from mid-center of the bottom edge to approximately mid-center of the right hand edge. Exceptions noted, the overall condition of this old magazine is good plus.

    Excerpt – Byzantine Carved Panels:
    The decorative treatment shown in the six examples of panel designs selected for the illustrations of this number is one of the most characteristic phases of Byzantine art. The whole tendency of Byzantine ornament I towards low relief or total absence of relief, as, for instance, in the mosaic decoration so much used in the style. There is no question that very beautiful and extremely rich effects can be obtained with such treatment, but it lacks in vigor as compared with relief ornament. Effect of color was the main purpose aimed at by the Byzantine architects, and relief ornament, by reason of the shadows it cast, often interfered with the freedom desired by the decorator. Consequently from the beginning there is a steady tendency towards flat ornament…
