Louise E. Bettens

Front Cover:

This is a delightful book about a wonderful woman. Mrs. Bettens born in Ghent, Kentucky was both married and widowed at a young age with three small sons to provide for. She educated the children and herself and did a wonderful job of it. She was first and foremost a book lover. She also loved art and music. This is a loving tribute to her by her son Edward.

This is a “Limited Edition” copy which was published in 1918. The green cloth cover has gilt detailing on the front and gilt title on the spine. The cover shows minor signs of wear to the edges, corners and to the top and bottom of the spine. The four corners of the covers are slightly bowed. The spine is tight and the hinges are strong. The pages are printed on good quality paper and show no signs of rips or foxing. The top edges of the pages are gilt. Exceptions noted, the overall condition of this old book is near very good.

Excerpt:
New York, April 10, 1917.

Dear Ware:

Your letter received. I have always hoped that my Mother’s character—one of aspiration under difficulties—might, if known, help and encourage others when in trouble. How to call attention to that character was and is the problem. I am still working at it, and perhaps will continue to do so, as long as I live.

The poet ahs described her life of Aspiration:

Build thee more stately mansions O my soul,
As the swift seasons roll!
Leave thy low vaulted past!
Let each new temple, nobler than the last,
Shut there from heaven with a dome more vast,
Till thou at length art free,
Leaving thine outgrown shell by life’s unresting sea!

For you consideration, and in answer to you letter, I enclose a statement of my Mother’s Memorial in Harvard College. I prefer that my name be not mentioned in that statement except where it is unavoidable.

Sincerely,
Edward D. Bettens,
Class of 1873, Harvard College.

Mr. Arthur Ware,
Secretary Class of 1873, Harvard College.
