by Elizabeth Stuart Phelps
Front Cover/Spine:
and Herbert D. Ward
This is a lovely piece of historical fiction. The story has a biblical theme and tells of ancient Babylon and Nebuchadrezzar the Great. The book was published in 1891 by Houghton, Mifflin and Company, Boston and New York. The book measures 5 inches by 7 inches and contains 324 pages. The gold cloth cover has a pictorial of a horse and chariot on the front. The cover shows signs of soiling. The cover shows signs of wear to the edges, corners (worn to the boards) and to the top and bottom of the spine (frayed). The spine is tight and the hinges are strong. There is a personal book plate on the inside front cover. The pages show no signs of rips or foxing. The first few pages show slight discoloration, probably caused by something which had been kept in the book as it is very symmetrical. Exceptions noted, the overall condition of this old book is between good plus to very good.
Excerpt - Note:
There are few things about which it is easier to disagree than a historical tale dealing with a period so remote that fable and fact contend for the field.
The authors of this story have taken the liberty of adjusting the uncertain calendar of the times to the necessities of art. They have not thought it urgent strictly to follow the Biblical chronology, for reasons obvious to any Oriental student and important to the movement of the narrative.
Modern Assyriology has become a rapid and complex series of discoveries. To dogmatise, is to be unscientific. The enthusiastic research of to-morrow may overthrow the theory of today. “The Master of the Magicians,” be it remembered, is not an archaeological treatise, but a novel.
