In God’s Out of Doors

by William A. Quayle

Front Cover:

This is a wonderful old book about nature, plants, trees, birds, flowers and all manner of things outside. It is filled with many vintage black and white photographs. The author speaks of some locations, the falls of St. Croix and Kansas, but for the most part, the book could be placed in Anytown, USA. The book was published in 1902 by Jennings and Pyle, Cincinnati and Eaton and Mains, New York. The book measures 6 5/8 inches by 9 ¼ inches and contains 232 pages. The green cloth pictorial cover has the title in gilt on the front and down the spine. The cover shows signs of wear to the edges, corners and to the top and bottom of the spine. For the most part, the spine is tight. The glue of the binding is dried a bit and is separated in several places, however, all pages remain firmly bound. The hinges are strong. The top edges of the pages are gilt. The pages are printed on good quality, glossy paper and show no signs of rips. For the most part, the pages show no signs of foxing. The exception is the end pages which are foxed, and the first few leaves and the last few leaves in the book. There is a personal book plate on the inside front cover. There is an inscription on the front free end page and a little photograph is glued underneath the signature. Exceptions noted, the overall condition of this lovely book is near very good.

Excerpt - Prelude:
Frankly, little is to be anticipated from the Author of this book. He is far from being a specialist. He is not entomologist nor botanist nor ornithologist. He confesses to knowing which end of a flower the root grows on and but little more.

He purposes writing because he loves God’s Out-of-Doors. The blue sky touches him to sadness, like reading a letter from one much loved and long dead; and the shadows in quiet water affect him like a prayer. The author’s wish is to people other hearts with love of flower and woodland path and drifting cloud and dimming light and moonlit distance and starlight and voices of bird and wind and cadence of the rainfall and the storm, and to make men and women more the lovers of this bewildering world fashioned in loveliness by the artist hand of God. And beyond all this, he would be glad to bring them into fellowship and love with Gods, which is the poesy and eloquence of life.
