From Absalon’s Castle to the third Christiansborg

This is a very interesting old book! It is filled with wonderful photographs in black and white and in full color. The book was published in 1970 by Bolingministeriet, ved Christiansborg Slotsforvaltning, Copenhagen. The soft cover book measures 5 ½ inches by 8 ¼ inches and contains 64 pages. The cover is securely attached. The cover shows minor signs of wear. The pages are printed on good quality, glossy paper and show no signs of rips. The signature of a previous owner is inscribed on the inside front cover. Exceptions noted, the overall condition of this book is very good.

Top: The Dining Hall is characterized by profuse and elegant woodwork in mahogany from the Queen’s Stairway in the previous palace. The chairs are new.

Bottom: His Majesty’s Library – The library is very old and contains about 90,000 volumes. It was rescued from the fires o f1794 and 1884.

The past 800 years have seen a succession of castles and palaces on the site of the present Christiansborg. Well-preserved remains of these buildings are on view under the palace and offer an interesting sight.

The best preserved ruin is of the castle founded by Bishop Absalon in 1167 on a small island in the Sound facing the fishing village of Havn. The castle was built as part of the defences against the constant raids of Wendish pirates.

In 1248, a large fleet from Lubeck captured the town and destroyed the castle. The stronghold was quickly rebuilt, however, and enjoyed a comparatively peaceful period until 1369 when it was conquered by the Hanseatic Lubeckers who employed 47 North German stone-cutters to demolish it…
