Excerpt – Dust Jacket:
This is a revised and completely re-set edition of a well-loved picture book of the face of Britain. It follows the pattern of its original, and contains many of the magnificent photographs that have in the past won for it so many friends. New photographs have, however, replaced those scenes that Time has altered, and room has been found for others which complete the design of the book, which is, as before, to provide a pattern-book of Britain, beginning with the grim old bastions of Dover Castle, and ending with the wild beauty of Scotland. The addition of a location map and a thorough revision of the text enhance the worth of a book of proven value, for pictures such as these are mirrors of a birthright cherished wherever English is spoken—in the Commonwealth, in America, and in other lands far apart.

The Tower of London. The great fortress on Tower Hill, begun by William the Conqueror nearly 900 year ago, seen across the busy highway of the Thames. Even in recent years it has served as a prison for those accused of treason.

The Sun Inn, Saffron Walden, Essex. This building, dating from the fifteenth century, is remarkable for its fine seventeenth-century plaster work, know as pargeting, various figures and devices being stamped on the wet plaster.

In the Gardens of Compton End, Near Winchester, A thatched Hampshire cottage, in the middle of whose delightful garden is a massive yew of great age, trimmed to form a natural arbor. Some yews are said to have survived over a thousand years.

Stonegate, York. A street of ancient houses leading to the Minster, in a city which was the capital of the Roman province of Britain. Much that is old has fortunately survived in York.

Dover Castle: The Key to England. The Constable’s Tower of the great castle, guardian today, as from earliest times, of the principal entry to England from the Continent. On a clear day one can see the French coast from Boulogne to Gravelines.
