The French War
And
The Revolution

by William Milligan Sloane, Ph.D., L.H.D.
Professor in Princeton University

Front Cover/Spine:

This is a very interesting, old book about the French and American War and the American Revolution. The book was originally published in 1893. This is a copy of the 1907 edition which was published by Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York. The book measures 5 1/8 inches by 7 1/8 inches and contains xxii, 413 pages. The blue cloth cover has an embossed and textured finish. The title is in gilt on the spine. The cover shows signs of wear to the edges, corners and to the top and bottom of the spine. The spine is tight and the hinges are strong. The pages are printed on good quality paper and show no signs of foxing. The top edges of the pages show some water spotting. The edges of the first pages (i-xviii) are folded/crumpled down from the top edge. There is an inscription on the front free end page. Exceptions noted, the overall condition of this wonderful, old book is good plus to near very good.

Excerpt - Preface:
This book is the second of a series of four, each of which, while complete in itself, is to form part of a connected history of the United States down to our own time. The limits of this volume are the years 1756 and 1783. This period has a unity in many ways. From the beginning of the “old French War” to the end of the Revolution the English commonwealths in America were both learning the necessity of union and growing conscious of a common destiny. It might even be said that while in one of the two conflicts they were hostile to France and in the other allied with her yet nevertheless such a connection is in itself substantive. Both illustrate phases of French history. A still stronger mark of the epoch is the continuous development in action of common exertion for the common welfare. But the strongest and most philosophical unit is in the evolution of a new theory of government during these years by the application of English principles to American conditions. The author hopes that while the narrative in the following pages is necessarily brief it is full enough to illustrate this essential conception in American history…
