Front Cover/Spine:
This is a very lovely, old, Victorian children’s novel. This neat story tells about a young boy who becomes acquainted with a soldier who is referred to as V.C. This book was published in 1893 by Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., New York & Boston. The book measures 4 ¾ inches by 6 ¾ inches and contains 201 pages. The cover consists of blue cloth spine & corners with ornate gilt decorative markings. The boards have a floral print insert. The cover is soiled. The cover shows signs of wear to the edges, corners and to the top and bottom of the spine. The spine is tight (if slightly cocked) and the hinges are strong. The paper covering the back hinge is split, however, the hinge holds strong. This is a former library copy from Friends Bible School, Brooklyn. A library sticker is on the spine near the bottom. The book contains the requisite markings, occasional rubber stamp markings. A date due sticker is on the back end page and a pocket on the inside back cover. The pages show no signs of foxing. For the most part, the pages show no signs of rips. The title page is torn up from the bottom edge, approximately 2 inches, near the spine. Exceptions noted, the overall condition of this book is good.
Excerpt:
“How do you do, V.C.? I am very glad to see you. I wanted to see you more than anything in the world. I hope you don’t mind seeing me because I have been a coward, for I mean to be brave now; and that is why I wanted to see you so much, because you are such a very brave man. The reason I was a coward was partly with being so cross when my back hurts, but particularly with hitting Jemima with my crutches, for no one but a coward strikes a woman. She trod on my dog’s toes. This is my dog. Please pat him; he would like to be patted by a V.C. He is called The Sweep because he is black. He lives with me all along. I have hit him, but I hope that I shall not be naughty again any more. I wanted to grow up into a brave soldier, but I don’t think, perhaps, that I ever can now; but mother says I can be a brave cripple. I would rather be a brave soldier, but I’m going to try to be a brave cripple. Jemima says there’s no saying what you can do until you try. Please show me your Victoria Cross.”…
