Excerpt:
For many folks archeology is mysterious and fascinating. It raises visions of treasure hunting in exotic places, spectacular and unusual discoveries, and people whose lives are one romantic, exciting adventure after another.

The publics fascination with archaeology is fed by news coverage that emphasizes the unusual and by movies such as Raiders of the Lost Ark , which gives an elaborate visual display of the fictional recovery of the lost Ark of the Covenant by an archaeologist, Indian Jones. Jones role in the film supports the idea that incredible adventures await those who take up the work of archaeology.

All the ark-related stories of the last decade have added to the confusion about what archaeology can do and has discovered. Articles and films about the supposed discovery of Noah’s ark can easily become associated in peoples minds with legitimate news reports about he recovery at Nabratien, Israel, of part of a synagogue ark (a place for storing Torah scrolls). This synagogue ark, in turn, becomes confused with the Ark of the Covenant of Raiders fame (this Ark was part of the shrine furniture used by the Israelites in the wilderness, Exodus 25:10-16).
