Captain Charles King was a prolific author. He wrote a great many historical novels about the expansion of the United States into the Wild, Wild West. Much of what he wrote was autobiographical in that he wrote from his own experiences.
King served in the Civil War as a teenager for the Iron Brigade under his father, Brigadier General Rufus King of the Wisconsin Volunteers. He attended West Point and graduated to receive his U.S. Army commission in 1866. He was a lieutenant in the 5th Cavalry, serving under General George Crook. Under Crook, Kingsaw active duty in Arizona and the Northern Plains states. King became friends with William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody. He served for five years at Fort Laramie, Wyoming. He witnessed Cody's famous duel with the Cheyenne warrior Yellow Hand in 876. King also taught military science and tactics at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
This book was published in 1901 by Hurst & Company, Publishers, New York. The book measures 5 ¼ inches by 7 ½ inches and contains 353 pages. The cover shows signs of wear, soiling and some water spotting. The spine is tight and the hinges are strong. The pages show no signs of rips or foxing. The front free end page is clipped (previous price marking?) and the signature of a previous owner is inscribed on the front free end page. Exceptions noted, the overall condition of this book is fair.
