At Chantilly, the Institut de France was given, initially by the Duke of Aumale, and then by collectors who took their example from him, a rich and varied bequest which includes the prestigious art collections grouped under the name of the Musee Conde; two very valuable libraries; family, domain and historical archives; seven castles with building dates ranging from the Middle Ages to the 19th century; many other diverse structures such as water elevating machinery, a model hamlet, vast stables, and a variety of houses; a large forest, arable land and lakes; a race course and riding tracks; golf links and a two hundred acre park with an intricate system of water flows and fountains.
