This is a very interesting book about China during the reconstruction period following the Russo-Japanese war. The book was published in 1957 by The Cresset Press, London. The book measures 5 ¾ inches by 8 5/8 inches and contains xii, 215 pages. The cover consists of cloth covered hard boards. The title in gilt on the spine is faded. The cover shows signs of wear to the edges, corners and to the spine area. The spine is tight and the hinges are strong. The pages show no signs of rips. There is a small star stamped on the bottom edges of the pages. Exceptions noted, the overall condition of this book is good.

Perhaps, like many other people, I was born with the craving for adventure in my blood; that would partly account for my journey to China in January 1906. No work awaited me there, and indeed I had been advised not to go; yet I stuck to my purpose. The Russo-Japanese war had come to an end in the summer of 1905 and I hoped to get a job on one of the reconstruction projects that were to be started.
I landed at Shanghai full of hop and a day or so later I called at the Swedish Consulate to seek advice and information and to present letters of introduction. The Consul did not open the letters while I was with him, but he urged me to make for some other country as speedily as possible. China did not seem to him to be the place for Swedish engineers…
