This is a very nice, vintage book about Japan. It was published in 1957 by McGraw-Hill Publishing Company, New York, London & Toronto. The book measures 5 7/8 inches by 7 5/8 inches and contains 399 pages. The orange cloth cover shows sings of wear and light soiling. There is a lovely gilt pictorial on the front and the title in gilt down the spine. The spine is tight and the hinges are strong. The book ahs lovely pictorial end pages. The pages of the book show no signs of rips. Exceptions noted, the overall condition of the book is very good.

The Westerner who has not despaired of understanding even a parcel of the dramas now cleaving this world of ours will find sudden glimmers of enlightenment if he takes the trouble to scour seas and continents, from Alaska to the Philippines by way of Europe’s tormented lands, from the Cape of Good Hope to Finland, and from Darkest Africa to the furthermost outposts of the human race on the shores of the frozen Ocean. To my mind, however, at present time two countries in particular merit the traveler’s attention. One is the centre of civilizing activities in the Far East, and the other, of all the States of the Near East, is the land most patently in the throes of evolution. Those who would benefit from a closer acquaintance with Japan and Turkey-the two countries I have in mind-but who are not in a position to undertake a journey there, may widen their knowledge of them by delving into carefully selected readings. To this end, as far as Japan is concerned, I have the impression that the present book should fulfill the wishes and satisfied the curiosity of the attentive reader…
