Dust Jacket - front:

This book contains many vintage photographs along with the current view of the location. The book was published in 1995 by Scripps Howard Publishing, Inc. The book measures 9 1/8 inches by 12 1/8 inches and contains 111 pages. The dust jacket shows minor signs of wear. The cloth hard board cover has the title in gilt on the front and down the spine. The cover shows no signs of wear to speak of. The spine is tight and the hinges are strong. The pages are printed on good quality, glossy paper and show no signs of rips. Exceptions noted, the overall condition of this book is very good.

For European immigrants looking for a fresh start the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky area was a familiar landscape. They envisioned grapes growing on hillsides, pigs being fattened for sausage and rivers to take their produce and products to market.

For African-Americans following the North Star to freedom the Ohio River was the magical dividing line between the north and the south.

And for Appalachian farmers living in the mountains, this area promised jobs not only to feed their own families, but also extra money that could be sent home to help those who stayed behind…

Trying to capture such a varied community in picture form is thus a difficult task, but that is the intent of Then & Now in Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky.

Selecting from hundreds of sites became an exciting, but at times frustrating chore. In some cases it was difficult to find old pictures of well known sites. In other cases fine old pictures were available, but the location of trees-mere sprouts in old pictures-now shows majestic, sprawling oaks and maples that block a photographer’s view of buildings as they presently stand…
