The Practical Book of Oriental Rugs

by Dr. G. Griffin Lewis

Front Cover:

This is a very lovely book about oriental rugs. It is illustrated profusely with 32 tissue covered illustrations, 92 doubletone & 70 designs in line, chart and map. Each of the colored illustrations is tissue covered. The tissue is printed with descriptive text about the illustration. The book was published in 1920 by J.B. Lippincott Company, Philadelphia and London. The book measures 6 ¾ inches by 9 inches and contains 375 pages. The cloth cover shows minor signs of wear, hardly worth mentioning. The spine is tight and the hinges are strong. The paper covering the front hinge is split, however, the hinge holds strong. The pages show no signs of rips or foxing. The top edges of the pages are gilt, the remaining edges are deckled. Exceptions noted, the overall condition of this old book is very good.

Khorasan Carpet
An East Persian rug of especially heavy weave in robin egg blue, soft red and cream.

Design: Serrated centre medallion, confined by broad blue corner bands and seven border strips. A rug of elaborate conventionalized floral decoration, wit a modern rendition of Shah Abbas design in border.

Kazak Rug
Knot: Ghiordes. Nine to the inch vertically and eight horizontally, making seventy-two to the square inch.

One will seldom see a more beautiful and more glossy piece, especially among the Caucasian fabric, and neither the material nor dyes can be excelled.

The black in the background is of natural black sheeps wool covered with all sorts of animals, birds and symbols, most of which are in a rich rose color. The main border stripe consists of the crab design in subdued tones of yellow, blue and red with more or less white.
