This is a lovely book about the Cloisters. It was published in 1951 by The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The soft cover book measures 5 ½ inches by 8 ½ inches and contains xxxvii, 159 pages. The cover shows minor signs of wear with some surface chipping to the sides of the spine. The cover is securely attached. The pages are printed on a good quality, glossy paper and show no signs of rips. Exceptions noted, the overall condition of this book is good.

Excerpt - Preface to the First Edition:
In 1925 John D. Rockefeller, Jr., presented to the Metropolitan Museum of Art a sum of money with which to purchase and maintain the collection of mediaeval sculpture and architectural material assembled by George Grey Barnard and since 1914 open to the pubic a brick structure built especially for it on Fort Washington Avenue.

The Barnard collection was perhaps the most extensive of its kind in America at that time. Both the way in which it was brought together and the manner in which it was displayed were remarkable achievements of enthusiasm and industry on the part of a single individual. Large sections of the cloisters of the long abandoned and ruined monasteries of Saint-Michel-de-Cuxa, Saint-Guilhem-le-Desert, Bonnefont-en-Comminges, and Trie formed the nucleus of a collection in which there ahad been brought together such notable pieces of mediaeval sculpture as the tomb effigy of Jean d’Alluye, a Romanesque torso of the crucified Christ, wooden figures of Mary and John from a thirteenth-century Crucifixion group, and numerous statues of the Virgin from the Ile-de-France and Lorraine…
