This is a neat old book. It is filled with many illustrations from the Civil War. This book was published in 1955 by Garden City Books, Garden City, New York. The cover consists of paper covered hard boards. The cover shows signs of wear to the edges, corners and to the top and bottom of the spine. The spine is tight and the hinges are strong. The pages show no signs of rips. The name of a previous owner is signed on the front free end page and on the half title page. The edges of the pages have several “spots” on them. Exceptions noted, the overall condition of this book is good.

Excerpt - Preface:
This is a book about the Civil War by the people who saw it and lived it. It is a compilation, mainly from the files of Harper’s Weekly, but also with a good deal of material from Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, of on-the-spot reports and drawings of what happened during the greatest of American conflicts and of the popular conception of the importance of the events of the war.

The Brady photographs have become justly celebrated for their contemporary delineation of war details and scenes. But the technical equipment of photography in 1861-65 did not permit anything but time exposures, and there was no means of reproducing a photograph directly. Therefore very few participants in the Civil War ever saw a Brady photograph. It had to be reduced to a drawing and the drawing reduced to a woodcut before it got in the papers…
