By Henry Ward Beecher
Front Cover:
This is a lovely old book. The illustrations are divine. The book was published in 1870 by J.B. Ford and Company, New York. The book measures 5 ½ inches by 8 inches and contains 55 pages. The book has been used and loved over many years. The reddish brown cloth cover has gilt title and detailing on the front and down the spine. The boards are beveled along the edges. The cover shows signs of wear overall with the cloth soiled in places and bubbled in several places. The top and bottom of the spine are chipped. The corners are worn to the boards. The cloth is torn on the bottom left of the front board. The edges are bumped. The hinges are strong. The spine is cracked between one of the sections. The pages are printed on a heavy, almost card stock and show no signs of rips or foxing. There is some staining (water spots?) to some of the pages. The edges of the pages are gilt. The outside of the book is in fair condition, however the inside pages are in good condition. Exceptions noted, the overall condition of this book is fair. But the book is wonderful and you just might fall in love with it just the way it is.
Excerpt - Publishers Advertisement:
This little book is issued with a double intent. Complete in itself, it comes to the public most appropriately as a Christmas offering. And yet it bears reference to other topics and broader views than those of which it treats, and gives evidence of being, as it is, a fragment from a larger work. It is that portion of Mr. Beecher’s Life of Jesus, the Christ, which depicts the scenes and events clustering about the birth of our Lord. And the Publishers not only hope that it will be accepted as peculiarly harmonious with the happy Advent season, but believe that the mode in which it presents the record of those holy and precious scenes will arouse a still deeper interest in the forthcoming volume.
