This is a lovely book about Russia. It is a First Edition which was published in May, 1912 by Dodd, Mead and Company, New York. The book measures 5 1/8 inches by 7 ˝ inches and contains 253 pages. The red cloth cover is faded ins spots and a bit soiled. The title is in gilt on the front and down the spine. There is some cosmetic water spotting to the pages. They show no signs of rips or tears with one exception. One photograph has been removed from the book and the page it had been attached to has a small tear. There are no signs of foxing. The spine is tight and the hinges are strong. Exceptions noted, the overall condition of this book is good.

The Russian, rarely hilarious, is usually good-tempered. He is without conceit, will often stoop to serve, and is invariably courteous to strangers. The writer recalls the kindness of two merchants who surrendered their window seats and rode backwards during a seven-hour journey, with the unselfish desire to increase the pleasure of others. At the station buffet, they rose from their dinner to ascertain the needs of their co-travelers and translate them into Russian to the waiter. At another time a passing inquiry of a medal-bedecked general resulted in his making several trips, half the length of the train to give added information.
